Blood on a toothbrush and blood in the sink from bleeding gums, one of the signs of gum disease

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease, which is an infection of your gum tissue, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Gum disease is often painless, so you might have it and not know. Here are some warning signs to watch for:

Redness and swelling

In its early stage, gum disease is called gingivitis. It often causes redness and swelling in your gums. The inflammation may cause some tenderness or you’ll have red, puffy gums without any pain.

Bleeding gums

If you floss your teeth and notice bleeding, you likely have gum disease. Your gums may also bleed when you brush your teeth or press down on the tissue with your finger.

Persistent bad breath

Do you struggle with bad breath you can’t get rid of? It might be gum disease. The bacteria that cause gum disease produce a strong odor. Some patients also report a bad taste in their mouth.

Gum recession

Gum disease attacks your gum line. If bacteria go unchecked, your gums pull back from your teeth. You might notice that your teeth look longer than usual. As your gums pull away, pockets develop and fill with even more bacteria. If untreated, you can end up with damaged bone and tooth loss.

Loose teeth

Do your permanent teeth feel loose? That’s a clear sign that you have more advanced gum disease. Eventually, gum disease will cause your teeth to fall out.
